Why Am I Always Late to the Party???
I swear, the story of my life is that I'm ALWAYS late! Even when I TRY to be early...it's truly exasperating. And it's not just with things like appointments, church, etc., I'm always a little late to the party when it comes to fandoms that I ultimately fall head over heels in love with. For example, the only reason I started watching Supernatural was because I kept stumbling over the re-runs on TBS - they had to already be into at least season 5 or 6 before I started on my crash marathon via Netflix. Thank goodness we're starting season 13! At least I've had a few years to be part of the SPN family (and even go to a convention! I seriously need to blog about that experience!). And then there's the time I discovered Veronica Mars (hello fellow marshmallows), but not until it was a few years post cancellation. It took me three seasons before I got brave enough to watch The Walking Dead. Well, you get the gist of this story...
And now I bring you the latest edition of "Which Party is Mendy Joining just a Little Too Late?" My most recent obsession...Black Sails. I started watching it just barely over a month ago and I'm already on the fourth and final season. Cue the big, crocodile tears.
I honestly had never heard about this show until I was listening to a podcast about another Starz series, Outlander, and heard one of the hosts of the show talking about Black Sails. She also mentioned being friends with another podcaster who had a program called "Fathoms Deep," which focused on Black Sails. The first time I heard it I thought it was intriguing, but I just really didn't want to devote my time to yet another TV show. I really do watch way too much TV and I'm trying to start being a bit more deliberate about my choices. So, I let it go. Several months later, I heard it mentioned yet again on the same podcast. At this point, all of my shows were on hiatus so I thought, why not? A free trial of the Starz app and I was hooked!
So what is Black Sails about? In a word, pirates. But there's also tall ships, deep characters, complex relationships, incredible action sequences, love/hate stories, violence (sometimes to the level of disturbing), and ultimately great storytelling about the power of great storytelling. It's amazing. Now it is definitely for a mature audience, and although this fanmom allows her teenage son to watch The Walking Dead, he is certainly NOT allowed to watch Black Sails, so keep that in mind if you're considering it. I mean, there are certain scenes that even I will cover my eyes for a bit!
This show has masterfully intermingled fictional pirates alongside historical pirates, creating a backstory of events happening prior to Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island. Needless to say, I've found a copy of Treasure Island at the library to start reading as soon as I finish the final episode. Season 4 was released early this year and I quite literally just missed it...as I said, story of my life. But I'm making up for it, one (or more) episodes at a time (aka every day). I've also been thoroughly enjoying the Fathoms Deep podcast, which publishes one podcast per show episode, digging deep into the character arcs, themes and storytelling in a thought-provoking and seriously fun way! If you enjoy podcasts and decide to watch Black Sails, having Liz Stephens and Daphne Olive as part of your crew will make for a far more enjoyable journey. (And they can teach you all about gifs, #jannax & #hamilsails!)
Bear McCreary creates the music for this show, and it's simply incredible.
So clearly I can add another fandom to my ever growing list of fanmom favorites. I only wish I had been aware of Black Sails when it began and been able to engage with other fans during its run. Thank goodness for hashtag searches on Twitter!! In the meantime, I will keep binge watching til the bitter end and telling everyone else who never heard of it that they NEED to watch this show! Maybe I know some people who need season 1 on DVD for Christmas...
And definitely check out the Black Sails website: https://www.starz.com/series/blacksails/episodes
