Power, Grace, Wisdom, Wonder Woman Rocks!
(SPOILER FREE REVIEW) As most fan moms and geek girls know, the superhero genre is
generally a testosterone fueled, explosion heavy landscape. Now while us ladies enjoy a fun, action
packed film or television show as much as anyone, I think I can safely say,
we’ve always wished for our female heroines to get more screen time. This weekend, Wonder Woman gave us what we’ve
been wishing for, and then some!

I personally have always been more of a Marvel girl than
a DC girl, but when I heard that Wonder Woman was getting her own film, I was
equally thrilled and terrified. Wonder
Woman has been my hero since I was a little girl. I had Wonder Woman toys, Underoos, and even
had a Wonder Woman birthday party! I
watched Lynda Carter bring Wonder Woman to life, and I have enjoyed the various
cartoon versions of my favorite heroine.
I was thrilled to know that we were finally getting not only a female
led superhero film, but it was the one and only Wonder Woman.
Now for the terror. I
can’t speak for everyone, but for me, the recent DC films have been pretty
disappointing. Man of Steel, Batman vs.
Superman, and even before that with the Christian Bale series of Batman
films…lots of great special effects and incredible fight scenes, but not really
much else. The stories didn’t have much
substance or heart. So what would they
do to Wonder Woman? Would she be the
hero I remembered? Or would this be
another disappointment?

Wonder Woman, starring Gal Gadot and directed by Patty
Jenkins was, in a word, WONDERFUL! It
struck the perfect balance of action and story, giving us just enough of Diana,
Princess of Themyscira’s back story before moving her away from her Amazon home
and into the world of man. Her fight
scenes were glorious and filled with not only action, but purpose and
heart. It’s that heart that made this
film a stand out among the other DC films, and it’s what kept the audience
wanting more.
The countless strong female roles in this film were fantastic. Robin Wright as Antiope, Connie Nielsen as
Queen Hippolyta and Lucy Davis as Etta Candy all had stand-out
performances. The fellas weren’t too bad
either, especially Chris Pine, who brought Captain Steve Trevor to life, in all
his “above-average” glory! This cast
seemed to have great chemistry, and even though the film was 2 hours and 21
minutes long, there were still characters I wished I had a little more time
with, just to learn more about their backstory.
Before the film, a
preview for Justice League was shown, and to be perfectly honest, I haven’t had
any interest in seeing it, until now.
It’s highly possible I will be disappointed with it also, but if Wonder
Woman plays a prominent role, and she’s given the chance to shine, it might be
worth a watch. Oh and Jason Momoa…nuff
said.
Wonder Woman is a must see for all superhero fans out there,
but especially for fan moms and any geek girls they are raising or
mentoring. We’ve finally got our movie
ladies, our superhero! (And can I just
say that now I’m even more excited for Captain Marvel in 2019!) Girls rock!!!
